| The birthday cake has been an integral part of Western birthday celebrations since the middle of the 19th century. There are several schools of thought as to where the idea of the birthday cake originates from. Some think that it originates from Greek culture. The ancient Greeks used to make round or moon shaped sweet breads as a gift to the moon goddess, Artemis. Candles would be placed on these cakes to make them glow like the moon! Another school of thought is that the idea of a birthday cake originated in Germany during the Middle Ages. Sweet bread dough baked in the shape of baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling cloth was used to commemorate His birthday. |
